Llms.txt: The First Step to Winning at AI Search (GEO)

Jun 16, 2026 | AI, Blog, Heeler Insights

Search is changing. Google and Bing are moving away from ranked website links and toward AI-generated answers. According to a recent Ahrefs study, AI overviews reduce search clicks by 58%. Meanwhile, users are increasingly turning to AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for direct answers instead of browsing websites.

Staying visible in this environment means structuring your website so AI tools clearly understand what it covers and which pages matter most. This process is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

The first foundational step in optimizing your website for GEO is to add a file called llms.txt.

What Is An Llms.txt File?

Llms.txt is a plain-text index designed specifically for AI crawlers. It acts as a roadmap, telling AI assistants exactly what your site covers so they can cite you accurately.

It provides:

  • A clear description of what your website is about
  • A list of important pages
  • Plain-language summaries of each of those pages

Does AI Pay Attention to Llms.txt?

Not all AI models use this index yet, and Google hasn’t formally endorsed it (even though many of its developer docs websites include llms.txt files). Implementing it now puts your brand ahead of the competition. When adoption does catch up, you’ll already be there.

Pro Tip: Llms.txt doesn’t affect traditional SEO indexing systems. It’s a parallel structure tailored to how AI tools find and interpret content. So, you’ll still rank in Google search AND get citations from ChatGPT.

Take the Lead in GEO

Adding an llms.txt file to your website is just the first step in a broader AI visibility strategy. If you want your business to be the answer (and not just another search result), let’s talk about getting your website cited.
