Apple Maps Is Getting Ads This Summer. Are You Ready?

Jun 17, 2026 | Blog, Platform Updates

If you updated your iPhone in the last few weeks and opened Apple Maps, you saw a popup mentioning that ads were coming. You probably dismissed it and moved on.

That popup was Apple telling every local business owner in the US and Canada that the search ads have a powerful new option.

How Will Apple Maps Ads Work?

In March, Apple launched Apple Business, a new platform that gives businesses tools to manage devices, reach customers and run ads. They also confirmed that local search ads are coming to Maps this summer in the US and Canada.

When they go live, these ads will appear in exactly two places: at the top of search results and inside a new “Suggested Places” section. That section is live and populating organically right now, based on trending nearby locations and recent searches.

People rely on Apple Maps to explore new places and try new things. Soon local businesses can run ads on Apple Maps — right where customers are deciding where to go.

This Is Different From Google

Apple is building this on a privacy-first model. Location data and ad interactions are not linked to your Apple Account and will not be shared with third parties. Apple has been explicit about this.

That matters because it changes the targeting dynamic. Google Maps ads run on behavioral and search history data. Apple Maps ads will run on intent: what someone is actively searching for right now, where they are and what’s around them. That means less personalization and more presence. For local businesses, presence at the moment of decision is what drives foot traffic.

What the Ad Format Looks Like

Ads will appear with a subtle blue background and a clear “Ad” label, similar to how App Store search ads work today. There will be two placements: one sponsored listing at the top of search results and one inside Suggested Places. No floating pins scattered across the map.

The model is auction-based, similar to Google. Cost is controlled by the advertiser, with the flexibility to start and stop campaigns at any time.

What to Do Before the Summer Launch

Apple is already telling businesses to act now. Before you can run ads, you need a claimed and completed listing through Apple Business. If your listing is incomplete, unclaimed or has outdated information, you are not eligible to advertise when the platform opens.
The businesses that will get the most out of this are the ones that show up ready on day one. Claiming your listing costs nothing, but waiting costs placement.

This Is Just the Beginning

Apple Maps ads are one piece of a larger shift happening in local search right now. How Google Maps, AI Overviews and Apple Maps are dividing local search traffic in 2026 is a bigger conversation, and one to have before your competitors do.
